"The Hangover"

CD & Film - Film Reviews

Of Vice and Men

“The Hangover”

the-hangover-still

Prima facie, “The Hangover” is a rewrite of the dark comedy “Very Bad Things” (1998), in which a group of pals look to Vegas for brief moments of unfettered freedom from their girlfriends and fiancées, as if such women were North Korea itself. The similarities end there. The new movie exercises much more grip and proffers more to laugh at per frame than anything we’ve seen in a while—at least since “Borat” (Apatow movies notwithstanding). How so? For one is “The Hangover’s” impeccable symbiosis of matter and manner: its brilliant cast couldn’t do without its brilliant script, and likewise the reverse. And like all thoughtful comedies, the movie’s sense of humor is placed in the backseat. The focus is devoted to the plot, which allows the funny moments to flourish naturally in the only medium where real funniness is possible: in the context of plausible, real-life situations. This is not to say that the movie doesn’t boil to absurdity. In the wake of the men’s hangover (the hangover, definite article by no means an exaggeration) they find their lodging in utter devastation; there too is a forsaken infant, a tiger in the lavatory, a hen walking about, a mattress suspended on the roof on the apex of Ceasar’s sword. Missing only is the groom soon due at the altar and the men’s recollection of their the previous night’s gallivanting. As the guys map out the night’s events, we find ourselves willing to be led by its intrigues, making the movie not only achingly hilarious, but also one of best detective-ish movies to come out in a long time. “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Except for herpes. They come back with you.” Thus spake the father-in-law-to-be. And like herpes, this movie will stay with you. With cameos from Rob Riggle, Mike Tyson, and Mike Epps, which leaves you wanting more.
